Insurance Lawyer in Finland

An insurance lawyer in Finland can help you when your insurance company has rejected your claim. A rejection is not the final word. It is the company’s own reading of its own terms, and that reading is wrong often enough that it is always worth checking. We have handled more than 10,000 claim decisions, and we work with clients in English.

I go through on this page what we do, which disputes we take on, how the process works, what it costs and how you can reach us in English. If you already have a rejection letter in hand, you can skip straight to the free assessment.

You do not need to speak Finnish to challenge your insurer

Most people who move to Finland buy Finnish insurance policies, in Finnish, from Finnish companies. The policy terms are in Finnish. The rejection letter is in Finnish. It refers to a specific clause in a document you were never realistically going to read.

That is exactly the situation we are built for, and it is not unusual for us. We already work with clients who live in Finland but do not speak Finnish.

We handle your case with you in English. You do not have to read or write a single Finnish document. You deal with us in English, and we deal with the insurer in Finnish.

If you would rather the whole case ran in English, we can do that too. At your request we correspond in English with the insurance company and with the Finnish Financial Ombudsman Bureau (FINE) as well, not only with you. Our default is Finnish because it is the language the insurers and the board work in fastest, not because it is a limit on what we can do.

What we do

We do one thing. We get insurance companies to pay what the policy terms and the law require them to pay.

We are not a general law firm. We do not handle criminal cases, wills or contract disputes. We handle insurance claims, which means we know the policy terms of every major Finnish insurer, the case law of the Finnish Insurance Complaints Board, and the arguments each company uses when it does not want to pay.

That focus matters. A rejection is usually built on one clause and one factual assumption. Break either and the decision falls.

Which disputes we take on

Four types of damage make up most of the disputes we see.

Car insurance claim denied covers both kasko (comprehensive) and liikennevakuutus (motor liability). Collisions, theft, animal collisions, fuel errors, and arguments about the value of a written-off car.

Water damage claim denied covers leaking pipes, washing machine failures and roof leaks. This is Finland’s most common home insurance claim and its most frequently disputed one.

Fire damage claim denied covers house fires, sauna fires, electrical fires, and claims cut because the company alleges negligence.

Vandalism claim denied covers deliberate damage to your car, home or property by someone else.

We also handle travel, pet, forest and boat insurance disputes, and business insurance claims. If your case is not on this list, ask anyway.

How the process works

1. You send us the rejection. Email us the decision letter and your policy documents. Finnish is fine, because you do not need to translate anything.

2. You get a free assessment within 24 hours. We tell you whether the decision looks wrong, what the argument against it would be, and what we think your chances are. This is free, and it does not commit you to anything.

3. If it is worth pursuing, we take the case. We write the appeal, handle the correspondence, and take the case to FINE or to court if the company will not move.

We win 68 % of the cases we take. In the cases we rate as strong, 91 %.

What it costs

This is the question people ask first, so here is the plain answer.

  • Private clients: 329 € / hour (incl. 25.5 % VAT)
  • Companies: 285 € / hour (VAT 0 %)
  • Contingency option: 30 % of the compensation won, nothing if we lose
  • Free assessment: 0 €

Most of the bill is not paid by you. Finnish home, car and travel policies almost always include legal expenses insurance (oikeusturvavakuutus), which covers the legal costs of an insurance dispute. You pay the deductible. In practice a typical case costs the client 700–1,400 euros out of pocket, while the typical amount in dispute is 10,000–20,000 euros.

You may well have this cover without knowing it. We check it for you as part of the free assessment.

There is also a satisfaction guarantee. You can end the assignment at any time, free of charge.

How to reach us in English

The fastest way is the chat window in the bottom right corner of this page. Open it and switch the language to ENG. Our assistant answers in English, around the clock, and will pass your case to us.

You can also reach us directly:

  • Email: toimisto (a) vakuutusjuristi.fi
  • Phone: +358 45 7833 2771 (weekdays 10:00–17:00 Finnish time)

We serve clients across Finland. Insurance disputes are resolved by email and phone, so it makes no difference where you or the insurance company’s office happen to be. We do not keep a client reception space, which keeps the service cheaper. Meetings happen at your place, at the insurer’s, or over Teams.

Who we are

Vakuutusjuristi Pitkämäki Oy (business ID 3189892-5), founded by Petteri Pitkämäki, LL.M., licensed trial counsel. Over 10,000 claim decisions reviewed. Rated 5.0 from more than 60 Google reviews.

A note on titles, because it confuses people who are used to another legal system. We are not members of the Finnish Bar Association, so we do not use the protected titles asianajaja or asianajotoimisto.

This is not a lesser category. A licensed trial counsel (luvan saanut oikeudenkäyntiavustaja) is an established alternative to an advocate in Finland, can represent you in Finnish courts exactly as an advocate can, and is bound by substantially the same professional obligations, including independence, confidentiality, loyalty to the client and conflict-of-interest rules, under the Act on Licensed Legal Counsel. We are supervised by the same supervisory board that oversees advocates.

A rejected claim is worth a second opinion, and the second opinion costs you nothing.
